Tracking Your Habits Leads to Better Consistency

Tracking my habits is exactly how I lost weight and started gaining motivation every day.

Whether it be in an app, a journal or with a calendar that’s on the refrigerator it’s important to keep track of how you’re doing with whatever habit you’re trying to create.

If you’re trying to eat healthy meals you’d like to know how many days in a row you’ve accomplished that. Especially when it’s time to take a break and have some cake – you’d like to know that you were consistent for six-straight days before enjoying some delicious desert.

My personal goal is to workout 12-times a month. I use an app to track this which allows me to know exactly how well I’m doing. When I hit my goal month after month, it makes me motivated to continue my streak.

And there were some weeks where I didn’t do well. Once I realized that I quickly do whatever I can to get back on track.

In another example, you may have the goal to eat one handful of healthy vegetables at dinnertime. If you have a calendar on the fridge that showed green checkmarks on days where you accomplished this and red X’s on other days. One glance at all the green checkmarks helps build your confidence. Two red X’s in a row could motivate you grab your favorite salad tonight.

Tracking isn’t perfect nor a magic pill. You still have to do the work. But it does give you the awareness needed to know if you’re making steps toward or away from your goal.
